With Lightning Speed…

As Fire from the Sky indicates, we’re at peak season for lightning strikes (June through August). The Lightning Protection Institute offers the following tips on staying safe during a thunderstorm:

When You Are Indoors

  • Stand clear of windows, doors and electrical appliances.
  • Don’t attempt to unplug TVs, stereos, computers or other electrical equipment during a storm.
  • Avoid contact with piping, including sinks, baths and faucets.
  • Don’t use the telephone, except for emergencies.

When You Are Outdoors

  • Look for a shelter equipped with a lightning protection system, such as those found at golf courses, public parks and pools.
  • Never use a tree as shelter.
  • Avoid areas that are higher than the surrounding landscape.
  • Keep away from metal objects, including bikes, golf carts, fencing and machinery.
  • Avoid standing near tall objects.
  • Immediately get out of—and away from—pools, lakes and other bodies of water.
  • If you’re in a crowd, spread out.
  • If you feel a tingling sensation or your hair stands on end, lightning may be about to strike! Immediately crouch down, and cover your ears. Do not lie down or place your hands on the ground.

Learn CPR

Victims of lightning strikes need to receive immediate CPR. You won’t be electrocuted if you touch them. They hold no residual charge from the lightning, and they can be safely handled. You can sign up for a CPR class at your local American Red Cross chapter.
